SatNOGS Minimum Station

The simplest and minimum SatNOGS station can be assembled for $140US (as of Aug 2023) consisting of a power supply, Raspberry Pi 3B, MicroSD card, RTL-SRD and a dipole antenna. The system can be installed next to a window but works better if the antenna is just outside the window with a clear view of the overhead sky.

Here are the Amazon links to the products I’ve used:

Raspberry Pi with case and power supply

RTL-SDR with antenna

MicroSD card

You will also need a HDMI monitor w cable, USB keyboard and mouse to setup the system. Once connected to your Wi-Fi network, you can access the system using SSH.

Full instructions can be found on the SatNOGS wiki starting here: https://wiki.satnogs.org/Raspberry_Pi

Above is a picture of my test station in a ground level, east-facing window in a one-story building with a wooden roof. I’ve obtained surprising good observations (view here), but none good enough to decode. Again, that’s not the point. You just need an operational station to use other SatNOGS stations.
